in the book im reading one of the characters describes the moon as a “pale, clever orphan”. why did he choose the word “clever”? feels very specific. it made me imagine that what an author is actually doing is using words to pull a picture out of darkness. they select words and manipulate language to bring out the image as they want it to be seen but only they know the whole thing that they’re seeing.
