Bacon is now classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the WHO. I have never been a fan of bacon and will advocate for people to eat it less.
Friday we drove an hour to Shelly Beach and I committed to lathering my whole body in tanning oil, optimistic. It was cloudy. We brought Domino’s pizza and paid $37 for parking. The sun was not as aggressive as I hoped but we had a great time somehow even through a heated debate about our opinions on being bothered or unbothered by aggressive Aussie birds that lasted too long into us psychologically breaking down our behaviour in how we had the debate. As is often the case, a key takeaway was to improve our communication in a couple of ways.
We stuck around till 6p.m and talked on the sand the whole time. By the end I felt restless from sitting and started running in circles and doing yoga poses and Eric spilled a lot of water on himself.
We’ve been working our way through the ‘Relationship Expansion Pack’ by WNRS but the fake version that I actually bought on Temu. I spent way too much on the original WNRS card game and other expansions with international shipping, so I give myself this grace. (And I no longer shop on Temu.)
For dinner, Eric made curry udon for the first time. We’re now at the finale of Season 2 of Succession.
Eric signed up for his first pick up futsal game at the Rocks on Saturday with our friend Will. It was the monthly tourney day at advanced tempo, so all the players were really good and energy was high. The whole thing lasted three hours.
Eric and Will formed a team of five with the only other stragglers; the five other teams of five were preexisting soccer/friend groups. But all the players in Eric’s team were strong, and surprisingly, they placed second!
I was going to stray off and get four rolls of film developed that I’ve been really putting off. But the games were intense and so fun to watch, I stayed the whole time.
I was the only girl and sole spectator that wasn’t a player until some strangers came by later. The testosterone in the space was palpable, as was the harsh rubber smell of burning and skidded astro turf.
The players could be summarised as pretty much half Latino and half British. The Brazilians were loud, bodacious, playful. They shouted the whole time and laughed a lot. I admire how they speak with their whole entire body and soul. By the second half of the tourney the bleachers were full and buzzing.
Men who play soccer are all very much divas.
We had lunch afterwards at Bar Luca, a burger place I’ve been to just once before years ago, on a night out with Myer coworkers. Funnily, there was a period a couple months ago where multiple people recommended it to Eric and I, saying that we would like it and that it ‘suits our vibe.’ So we went.
Their most famous burger is called Blame Canada, packed with maple-glaze and ‘poutine.’ As always we ordered too much, with a beer and a vanilla thickshake.
We both fell asleep on the metro home. I conked after reading just four more pages of Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Kitchen Confidential.’ Reading is slow so far this year, I want to do it more often.
Once home we fucked around and played Mutiny on the computer for a bit which is a nostalgic primary school game for me. We would have played more Overcooked 2 but my parents were using the TV.
8:30p.m rolled around and we headed out for our reservation to see the movie ‘Is This Thing On?’ at a SOFA theatre at Events. They had a half price promo. We smuggled in Gongcha smoothies and bought a large popcorn.
My thoughts during the movie: making movies is hard. A lot goes into making each set. The moving box in Alex’s apartment looks too clean and fake. His bedside table is also too minimal. I guess it’s hard to put in effort into every part of a set design. Will Arnett’s voice makes me think of Bojack too much. Bradley Cooper’s character is annoying. Oh god, he’s having a cigarette in bed after having sex just like Bojack! I like comedy. This looks just like every pub I’ve been to that has comedy. He looks a bit like Saul Goodman. I wish they showed the audience’s faces more. Alex and Tess have honest conversations and they’re quite realistic. When you are talking to your partner, you do skip around like that. There is just so much to say and so much substance. They’re healthy and down-to-earth individuals, I like them. Is the moral of the story that couples do feel more grateful for each other again after breaking up or having time apart?
Safe to say, the movie was not good. But I enjoyed it and Eric and I had a lot to say about it afterwards.
