Across the street from my unit, these two dogs have become my happy place.

The shiba-looking one is called Funky. We’re not certain that is his name but that is what’s imprinted very small on the fabric of his collar. We call him the ‘Chinese dog’ because he looks like a Chinese dog breed that we also can’t name but maybe we’re wrong..

Funky used to bare his teeth at Eric and only let me get close. Lots of dogs dislike or fear men. Probably from a past bad experience. But Eric managed to win him over just the next day.

The other dog has no collar so her name is unknown to us. She is extremely friendly and happy to see us always, keen for every pat.

We visit them so often they now come over wagging their tails when we approach and follow us to the other side! I love them.

(The hunch of my back here is upsetting but look at them!)

I pat Funky more because he often sits back while the other one ceaselessly tries to get both our attention.

They are both a little stinky but still beautiful.

On this day an old lady walked by and stopped to admire the dogs. She pointed at the Chinese dog and said that one used to bark and make a ruckus whenever somebody walked by. Is he okay now is he? she asked. I said I did notice the Beware of dog signage, but yes they are very friendly. She said the other one has always been lovely, but she’s newer. It used to be just Funky.

We’ve seen the owners three times; so far it seems only a young Chinese (my assumption) couple lives here. A man we saw twice, both times smoking a cigarette in front of the side door at night time. We approached and peeped in as usual in hopes to see the dogs again but awkwardly made eye contact with the man before walking past. He seemed preoccupied enjoying his cigarette and scrolling.

We saw a woman once come out of the back door to the truck. She was in scrubs. We were already petting their dogs and I said Hello, she didn’t say anything so we awkwardly walked away. She didn’t pay the dogs much mind.

They actually own two trucks, and their house is nice—I’m curious how they are so rich.

All of their windows are screened with that one way privacy film; a rare sight and a little ominous. It only makes me more curious about this household.

Eric and I always said we wanted to get to know the owners, but it hasn’t gone anywhere so far.
