confessions of a tiny dancer
WHY ALL MUSIC LOVERS SHOULD FALL FOR A DJ, OR 4.
If the title made you cringe, this is not the article for you.

If your idea of a DJ is a sensationalized pop culture image akin to John Summit or the phrase “put your fucking hands up” this is not the article for you my friend. If none of what I  say speaks to you, you are safe to walk away.

More importantly, if anything here  resonates I would love to connect and hear about your experiences. After all we’re all anon here anirightfellas? Short story long starts below:

The most passionate love I’ve ever made has been to music lovers (who happen to be DJs) and just so happen to play music the way they fuck. In love or out of love those details are secondary to the fact that love was there even if it was covert and fleeting.

The following are 4 individual accounts of the poetry that has flowed through dancefloors and beyond. I truly hope to see this list grow as the connection shared by two music lovers Is a truly beautiful and sacred experience.

I am proudly and beautifully biased by my experience as a dancer and my love from music that has manifested into a love for Djing.

And a single caveat being these are some of my favorite DJs and likely always will be. My love for them as artists sprouted long before a physical attraction, this love existed before our romance and am happy it will continue long after.

In no chronological order or significance:

1 Mostly fun and playful, at times deep, but overall well rounded. A bit arrogant, but understandably so with a selection speaks for itself.
Heart is far from the sleeve, but Soul is prominent throughout (whether intentional or not).
Experienced with a diverse set of dance floors, an observartion only evident if one knows where to look. At his peak abilities that are shy of transcendence due to hyper independence and a need for certainty. love has grown and transformed but has not tapered into a crescendo.

  1. Performances are rare but not scarce and tend to come in sets of 3. Sets are long and open format, has truly mastered the art of tension and release. Attention to detail.
Works with feeling while letting the records pick themselves.
has a gift that can captivate any audience,
a dj im sure has saved many lives. a natural disposition towards humility favors him to fall away from the arrogance
which unfortunately is truly rare in this profession, but hey, arrogance is kind of part of the appeal.

  2. Well versed in selection but signature sound hits hard and deep. The selection is solid, familiar yet new and unique each time but could benefit from caring more about soundscape and technicality.  Serial redliner.
Selection is dynamic and varies, keeps you guessing. unpredictable but cautious.
at the end of the day will play what he wants but is paradoxically inhibited,
known to hold back (sometimes too much but others not enough) but the love is there no matter what.
Missing a connection to the audience  (by choice). I see and understand but trading this deeper connection as a survival strategy that aids in maintaining longevity. A hallmark of relatively young but experienced professional djs, (phenomenon similarly observed in 1).

  3. Have not seen as many performances and as I would have liked, hope to see more in my lifetime. Sexy, sultry, classic. short sets that will leave you satisfied and wanting more. What is lacking in dance floor experience is made up by a natural talent and a dedication to the craft.  evidenced by a selection that speaks in whispers in a language universally understood by the soul.
A sound that is the most accessible of all 4 and a superb technicality on par with some of the greats. missing a nuanced understanding of self and other. A connection that can only be mastered with time and experience. Palpable potential and promise.

Now for a personal account : still figuring out her sound not a performer, but a natural performer an intimate settings. Talent is dampened by an obsession for perfection and exploring all possible outcomes at the expense of proper self expression. prone to burn out and hindered by an inner critic. A selection that must exist in a proper context to be fully enjoyed by an outside perspective. Working on healing a relationship towards performing and Dj are like..  will improve drastically once she stops centering the other from her experience ;)

My journey with all 5 of these djs has come with a fair share of heartbreak and grief, but nothing I wouldn’t cue again in a heartbeat.
