recall is defined as:

to bring a fact, event, or situation back into one's mind, to remember

1.00

to cause you to think of a particular feeling or style of work

"the piece recalled the style of __artist/era"

to bring someone out of a state of inattention or reverie

"she was recalled to the present"

wake tf up, be here

recall is also defined as:

to request all the purchasers of a product to return that product to the manufacturer due to discovery of a fault or defect

"the item was recalled by the manufacturer"

this is particularly interesting to me – we are meant to trust mass production bc it's a system with rules and regulations, but quite often shit gets fucked up bc someone isn't paying attention or design is faulty bc someone doesn't care enough bc there's so much shit being made. and that mistake is multiplied by the thousands. my grandparents were killed in a car accident due to a faulty Ford part that was recalled shortly after the incident. though it happened before i was born, this was hugely formative for my thinking and part of the many reasons i have such disdain for mass production and distrust in large manufacturing practices/protocol. something going wrong and uncontrolled due to scale is extremely distressing to me. i believe in small batch, in care and attention, in control. i digress.

recall is also defined as:

the action or faculty of remembering something learned or experienced

"she had quick recall"

this is interesting to me because it gives memory a unit of measure, something that can be well executed or poorly executed. that you can have good memory but bad recall, that recall is about speed, poignancy, accuracy...

to remove a government official by a vote of the people

feels relevant hm

to revoke or take back

to cancel, to stop something already in motion

return to a state of repair

to be "beyond recall"

idea that some things you cannot come back from, irreversible change

overall, the thing means to bring back.

we are obsessed with bringing stuff back. trends, memories, phrases, times from our own lives and before. "can we bring this back" and "we are so back." we love this idea of stuff going away but not really if it can be recalled to us at any moment. nothing really goes away; partially true because everything lives forever on the internet and partially so not true because nothing will ever be the same so we make these nostalgic memes to cope with the fact. (see also: point #5 in @roman's recent blog post, regarding time being non-linear and all presents existing at once.)

i know there are so many good ones, please add them to bring it back channel if you think of them. this project is meant to be interactive.

see below, my notes, not dated bc like i said i am bad at keeping track of time but getting better. the entries before and after are dated 05.29.25 and 06.01.25 so it's safe to assume this was written on may 30th or 31st of 2025.

cover: magazine clippings scanned in my printer. the magazines i took from school. the printer was gifted to me by an old boss. the clippings were cut out and scanned on a fun evening with my old roommates mariah and paula at our spot in the arts district. mariah was working on a valtentine's day card for kevin and i was working on this. it is all charged with love.
